ChatGPT Study Mode vs Claude Learning vs Gemini Guided Learning
All three try to teach rather than tell: questions, hints, step by step. They differ in how you turn them on, what else they bring, and where they live.
Updated · 6 min readThe short version: they’re more alike than different. Each makes its chatbot ask you questions and guide you instead of answering outright. ChatGPT’s is the most widely used, Gemini’s adds images, videos and quizzes, and Claude’s has a version for learning to code. Use the one in the app you already use.

How to pick
- Already pay for one? Use its mode. The differences are smaller than the cost of switching.
- Learning to code? Claude Code’s Learning style has you write the key parts yourself.
- Like visuals and quizzes? Gemini Guided Learning brings them in.
- Want to talk it through? ChatGPT Study Mode works with voice.
Test them yourself
Give each the same problem you’re stuck on and, two messages in, ask for the answer. All three will usually give in if you push: the mode makes hints the default, not a rule. That’s fine, as long as you push only after a real attempt.
What none of them do
They’re chat windows: they know what you type, paste or upload, and what you learn stays in the chat. Pen Buddy takes a different approach. It’s a study notebook for Mac and iPad with a tutor built in, who follows the page you’re on, reads your handwriting on iPad, answers out loud in a sentence or two, and writes what matters into your notes, with review cards for later. Hints come before answers, always, without a mode. It isn’t out yet, and it’s Mac and iPad only. See how it works.
