Khanmigo alternatives for college students and self-learners

Khanmigo is one of the best tutors at not giving the answer away. It’s built around Khan Academy’s lessons, though, and learner plans are sold only in the US.

Updated · 5 min read

Khanmigo is Khan Academy’s AI tutor. It guides with questions rather than answers, lives on Khan Academy’s pages, and costs learners and parents $4 a month or $44 a year (pricing). Teacher tools are free. If you’re studying Khan Academy’s courses in the US, it’s a great choice. If you study from your own textbooks, lecture notes, PDFs or code, or live outside the US, you’ll want something else.

Where Khanmigo shines

  • Socratic by design: it’s built not to hand you the answer.
  • Tied to Khan Academy’s lessons and exercises, so it knows what you’re working on there.
  • Cheap, and free for teachers.

Where it doesn’t fit

  • Outside the US. Paid learner plans are US only (Khan Academy support).
  • Your own materials. It lives on Khan Academy; it doesn’t follow your textbook, your lecture slides or LeetCode.
  • Beyond school level. Khan Academy’s strength is school and early college courses.

Pen Buddy, for your own materials

Pen Buddy is a study notebook for Mac and iPad with a tutor, Buddy, built in. Like Khanmigo, it helps you work things out rather than giving answers. Unlike it, it works with whatever you’re studying: it follows the page you’re on, reads your handwritten maths on iPad, follows your screen on the Mac when you share it, and writes every session into your notes with review cards. It’s for college students and self-learners, wherever they are. It isn’t out yet. See studying with Buddy.

We make Pen Buddy, so weigh our view accordingly. Facts about other products come from their own pages, checked on October 14, 2026; prices and features change, so check the links.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

For learners and parents, $4 a month or $44 a year plus tax, according to Khanmigo’s pricing page in October 2026. Teacher tools are free.

Paid learner and parent plans are US only. Khanmigo’s free teacher tools are available in most countries.

For courses Khan Academy covers, it can help. For your own course materials, upper-level subjects or coding practice, a tutor that works with your own notes and screen fits better.
