Gemini Live vs ChatGPT Voice for studying
Both let you talk a problem through out loud and cut in when you’ve got it. They differ in what they can see, which learning mode they bring, and what it costs.
Updated · 6 min readFor studying, they’re close. Both are free to start, both let you interrupt, and both run on your phone. Gemini Live comes with Google’s free plan, and in the mobile app you can show it your camera or your screen. ChatGPT’s newest voice doesn’t do video or screen sharing; for that you need a paid plan and its older Advanced voice. For a tutor that sits in your notes and holds back the answer, there’s Pen Buddy.

Historians often group the long-term causes of the First World War as militarism, alliances, imperialism and nationalism.
In June 1914 the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo set off a crisis between Austria-Hungary and Serbia.
Within weeks, the alliance system drew in Russia, Germany, France and Britain, and a regional crisis became a continental war.

Gemini Live
A back-and-forth voice conversation in the Gemini app on Android, iPhone and iPad; Google says it isn’t in the Gemini web app for now. You can interrupt it or change the subject, turn on your camera to show it what you’re looking at, or share your screen, and you get a transcript when you end (Gemini Help). Gemini Live is part of the free plan; Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month and Pro $19.99 in the US, with higher limits (Google). Eligible US college students aged 18 and over can get Google AI Pro free for a year (Gemini for Students).
For studying, Google’s learning mode is Guided Learning: it asks questions, breaks things down step by step, and brings in images, videos and quizzes (Google). You choose it from More tools in the Gemini chat (Gemini Help). We couldn’t find anything from Google saying it carries over into a Live conversation.
ChatGPT Voice
ChatGPT Voice works on the web, iOS and Android. Its Live option listens and speaks at the same time, so you can interrupt, and you can ask it to wait until you’re ready to hear a response, which helps when you’re thinking out loud. Live doesn’t support video or screen sharing; on iOS and Android, eligible subscribers can still share their camera or screen with the older Advanced option (OpenAI Help). Free includes limited voice; Go ($8 a month), Plus ($20) and Pro (from $100) add more, and voice with video starts at Go (pricing).
ChatGPT’s learning mode is Study Mode, on every plan. It asks questions, explains in layers and checks your understanding, and OpenAI says you can use voice dictation with it. OpenAI also says it may sometimes give a direct answer (OpenAI Help).
Where they’re better than Pen Buddy
- They’re free to start, and on your phone. Pen Buddy runs on Mac and iPad only.
- Breadth. They’re general assistants: they search the web, connect to your other apps, and help with far more than studying.
- Your camera. Point a phone at a textbook page or a worksheet and talk about it. Pen Buddy follows what’s on your Mac or iPad instead.
Where a general assistant falls short for studying
- Hints are a mode, not a rule. Guided Learning and Study Mode live in the chat, and you have to choose them. In a plain voice conversation, the answer is one question away.
- It sees what you show it. Sharing a phone screen or pointing a camera works, but it isn’t the page you’re working on at your desk.
- What you learn stays in the chat. A transcript is useful, but it isn’t your notes, and nothing brings it back before the exam.
Where Pen Buddy differs
Pen Buddy is a study notebook for Mac and iPad with a voice tutor, Buddy, built in. Hints before answers is simply how Buddy works: a question to nudge you, then the smallest hint, and a full solution only when you ask. It follows the page you’re on, and on the Mac your screen when you share it, with a “Screen shared” badge and a stop button always showing. It answers in a sentence or two and stops when you cut in. Each session is written into your note, and your notes become review cards with spaced repetition, so what you worked out comes back before the exam. See how it works.
Which to pick: to talk something through on your phone, for free, either assistant is a good choice. If you study at a Mac or iPad and want a tutor that follows your page, keeps to hints and leaves you with notes to revise from, try Pen Buddy.
